Dressing Organic for Springtime Fun + Our Secret Damper on a Stick
The days are slowly getting longer and warmer. Springtime is just around the corner and our entire family is longing for the extra bit of outside playtime that comes along with the change of season.
As a mother of two wild boys, who absolutely adore the outdoors, I am faced with the challenge - or in my case pleasure - of dressing them for their daily outdoor adventures. I am always on the lookout for sturdy, yet soft and comfortable clothes for my active boys. Shopping in the generic stores here in Australia can definitely make this challenging. I know that I am not alone, which is one of the many reasons that I started Elves in the Wardrobe.
Organic clothes for springtime fun
The organic clothes that we sell are all built to last. They are made of beautiful, high quality materials such as cotton, so that they are beautifully soft and do not fall apart when my kids do what kids do best – play! We also hand pick brands and clothes that are fun, like the little ones that will be wearing them. I am always on the lookout for bright, quirky patterns that can keep up with and further the wild imaginations of our little ones.
Investing in organic kid’s clothes, that I know will last and be able to keep up with my boys is vital.
I know just how important free outside play is for my children, as it allows them to utilize their abundant energy in a very active, grounding & creative way, rather than a noisy, self-destructive & hyperactive output. On top of this, outdoor play also plays a huge role in strengthening their immune system, especially as the seasons change and their bodies adapt to the environment around them.
Dressing for the seasons
The seasons play a huge role in how I go about dressing my boys in their organic outfits and if you’re your children are anything like mine, the season does not affect their desire to play outdoors. Because Knoa, my youngest, loves running around barefoot all year round I am constantly trying to make sure that he is dressed appropriately for the climate. The last thing any of us want is for our little ones to catch a cold because they didn’t have enough layers. If you are in need of some layering advice take a look here.
As much as my boys like to climb trees, ride their bikes, fight with sticks against dragons or each other, shoot rockets into space, there is something else they love even more - having a bonfire!
No birthday celebration in our family is complete without a fire.
There is something very special about being outside, watching the sun going down, while warming ourselves by the fire and making some delicious food.
It is usually simple foods that my boys enjoy the most. Trying to steer away from sugary marshmallows, I take inspiration from my own childhood in Germany. We would always make the most delicious dampers on sticks and toast them over the fire.
I have introduced this little ritual to our family and hope that you will too!

How to afford organic baby & children clothes
Ever since my first baby was born, I have felt a strong need to provide extra care & nurturing for my children. I can imagine that this is probably the case for almost every mother & mother to be.
This need expressed itself in many different ways including; eating healthy foods, creating a calm, natural & peaceful environment and putting lots of organic goodness on and around him. This includes skin care products, nappies, bedding, toys, and of course clothes.
Back then we didn’t have a lot of money to spend, so we prioritised quality and feel rather than quantity. Organic products were (and still are) a huge part of our natural lifestyle choice and one of our top priorities as a family.
However, when you don’t have a lot of money it can be hard to pursue a healthy lifestyle. It is not impossible though, you just need to get creative and come up with ideas to make an organic lifestyle affordable!

Generally organic baby clothing is a little more expensive
Some of this is because it costs organic cotton farmers more to produce organically (about 10% more), and organic fabric dyers more to use fewer chemicals and ensure the wastewater is not toxic (another 10%).
The added expense also comes about because there are now requirements for those who produce certified organic cotton fabric & clothing to treat workers more ethically (which costs more).
Another reason that organic baby clothes can be more expensive is because the market is smaller – there are fewer clothes being produced, which means production is more expensive (economies of scale and all that).
The remainder of the cost is because organic baby clothes are a better quality product (the garment makers spend longer cutting and constructing) and some of the cost is just because …well organic baby clothes are viewed as a luxury product and there is a premium associated with that.
So how can you afford organic baby clothes online?
1. Internet Shopping
I was always a great lover of Internet shopping. It meant that I could literally do the shopping whenever I had a moment throughout the day. Not being dependant on shop opening hours is a great plus, especially when you have a newborn baby and you live in a remote area.
Internet shopping also provided me with a much wider range to choose from, which is another great plus. It’s great because you can take your time and do your research, especially when you have a very clear idea about what you are looking for and how much you can spend. Or on the other hand, you may have no idea and need some inspiration.
You can also take a moment to think about your transaction, without feeling pressured by sales assistants, children or time. I could always come back later and finalise my purchase.
During my ‘shopping research’, I also discovered the world of EBay, where I initially started to buy second-hand clothes and then later on (as bubby outgrew his clothes), started to sell clothes, furniture, toys, bedding, etc.
In doing that I was able to afford some brand new, beautiful organic baby clothes, which are generally much better quality. Organic clothes are made to last and even stains seem to come out more easily.
Buying better quality organic clothes meant that by the time my babies (and now children) had outgrown their outfits, I was still able to get a good price for them, as they still were in very good conditions.
Now, having my own online business in Australia, my daily researches have lead me to another great website, that specializes in selling second hand ethical organic clothes - http://mukakids.com/shop/
Muka kids help make genuine ethical, organic & sustainable clothing more affordable. You can buy & sell preloved clothing that meets the ethical & environmental criteria on Mukakids- shop.
2. Sign up to the newsletters & social media of organic baby clothes brands you love
Internet shopping, as mentioned before, is a great way to find exactly what you are looking for and quite often at a discounted rate, as there are so many promotional offers, discount codes for signing up to newsletters and sales.
When you sign up you usually get a discount code up front. In addition, web shops will often let you know early about any organic baby clothes sale, and if you follow them on Facebook you can often pick up one day sales and deals on their organic baby clothes online.
3. Help your parents & loved ones to sign up to newsletters & social media for organic baby clothes brands you love
Lets face it, a lot of our new kids clothes come as gifts. If your parents, grandparents and other chief gift givers also get alerts and discounts straight to their inbox from brands that you trust and feel comfortable with, chances are you will end up with new organic cotton baby clothing.
With all these discounts on new organic baby clothing, alongside the ease of buying and selling pre-loved organic baby clothing online, buying organic cotton baby clothing this way may actually be CHEAPER than conventional clothing.
You can dress your baby and children in modern organic clothes in a way that is affordable.
My personal experience with loud+proud and many of the other brands such as; DUNS, Ubang and Leela Cotton has been outstanding.
It is far from impossible to get affordable, high quality, organic baby clothes online.
Enjoy!

St. Nicholas Special
St. Nicholas Day is a popular occasion for children in many parts of Europe because children usually receive gifts on this day.
Some European cities such as Bari, Italy recognize St. Nicholas as the patron saint and celebrate with different activities such as gift-giving, parades, feasts and festivals.
St. Nicholas is referred to by many names throughout Europe such as Sinterklaas in the Netherlands or Nikolaus in Germany.
In the days leading up to December 6, children throughout Europe put their shoes or a special St. Nicholas boot in front of the fireplace or the front door at night to find them filled with small presents the next morning.
A larger amount of gifts is usually brought on the eve of St. Nicholas Day or December 5.
My boys just starting to clean there shoes and getting ready for Nikolaus to come!
Wishing you all a wonderful St. Nicholas Day / Nikolaus.
Enjoy our little Elves in the Wardrobe gift!

Elves in the Wardrobe Online Organic Shop Turns One
The first year of our online organic children’s clothing store, Elves in the Wardrobe, has gone by at record speed. I cannot believe that we are already turning the page in our Elves in the Wardrobe magic book and celebrating our first birthday.
I am taking this moment to reflect on our first year and think about what the future holds for our online organic clothing store.
Elves in the Wardrobe was born from a love and passion for soft and organic fabrics, beautiful designs and a desire to create something that not only nourishes my family and I, but also has a healthy and ethically sustainable background. For me, nothing feels better than dressing my growing boys in their new organic and sustainable clothes from brands like Leela Cotton and loud+proud. I am absolutely delighted when I see gorgeous little people wearing beautiful clothing from our online organic kids clothing store (especially when I go for a walk around my little town or pick up my children from the bus stop – what a delight!).
As our little online organic shop grows, so too does my desire to do more than simply provide an income for my family in an ethical and sustainable way. I want do more for people, the environment and our world. Looking around I have found so many businesses that are about so much more than just making money. They are helping the world in so many ways and this is utterly inspiring and touching for me as a business owner:
https://www.goodspender.com.au/
https://au.whogivesacrap.org/pages/our-impact
As we move into our second year, I am determined to not only better our online organic store, but also better what we stand for and how we contribute to the world around us.
My wish list for Elves in the Wardrobe:
- To find a social project that involves ending child labour and creating a sustainable future for these children and their families. I would like to become actively involved in such a project by donating part of our sales profits and time to this project.
- Expanding our range of beautiful, fair-trade, organic, baby & children clothes.
- Continue to work on our NEW wonderful online organic clothing shop, that will make all of this possible.
- And of course, play our part in making the world a more beautiful & magical place for children & families.
I would love it if you could send me any messages, links & ideas or feedback that you may have in regards to a social project for Elves in the Wardrobe. Please send me an email at enquiries@elves-in-the-wardrobe.com.au

The Art of Dressing Your Kids for the Cold
There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
Growing up in a place like Germany always required a fair amount of preparation time, before heading out into a frosty & cold winter day. From a very young age on, we had to learn to dress ourselves appropriately and it was always about the layers!
Bringing up my own children in Australia is not such a serious business as the temperatures aren't as extreme. Even though, there can be some frosty nights and mornings but the days are more like a beautiful Autumn day in Germany.
Yet, it is still important to follow the same rules to ensure your baby & kids clothing will keep them warm & dry through the colder months of the year!
It is safer when you and your children are dressed properly. Remember, there is no bad weather, just bad clothing.
In winter, the best idea is to stay warm and dry. Being too hot makes you sweat creating moisture. When it is cold outside, being damp is uncomfortable and can be a danger as you will lose body heat more quickly.
Here are a few pointers that will help dress your kids for winter:
Be aware of the weather
When the temperature is just above or just below freezing, the chance that you will get wet increases. This is because the air holds more moisture at the freezing point than when the temperature is very cold. When it is very cold it is easier to stay dry.
Take a minute to check the weather forecast.
- Is there precipitation expected?
- What is the humidity and temperature?
- Will the weather be changing while you are out?
Think about what activities you are going to be doing in the cold:
- Are you going to be very active all the time or on and off?
- Or are you moving at a steady, leisurely pace?
- Will you be standing around or sitting a lot?
The answer to these questions can help you decide what clothing to dress your kids in and how much you will need to be able to adapt their clothing to changing activity.
Dress in layers:
- Layers allow you to be more flexible to changing weather conditions and your own activities.
- Layers create an air space between the skin and the cold and this space is what insulates best.
- Layers are also looser, allowing for better blood circulation which helps to maintain body temperature.
Three layers:
The skin should be covered in a thin layer that helps to move moisture away from the body.
Keeping your skin dry helps keep you warm and comfortable.
Kids clothing made from wool and silk are the best as well as organic cotton.
This is the insulating layer.
Wool and fleece and thick double layered organic cotton work best.
This is the water and wind protection layer, if necessary.
Get a long coat so that you can sit comfortably.
Coats should have high collars and a hood.
Layering also applies to hands and feet & head?
Boots should be comfortable and not too tight.
Tightness will constrict blood flow and make your feet colder.
Boots should also have a good sole for grip and stability on slippery or uneven surfaces.
You can also wear a thin pair of gloves if the weather is cold & windy.
These accessories are a crucial part of your kids clothing in winter.
Your head and neck are major sources of heat loss.
A hat and a scarf are a must in cold weather.
If you are worried about your child wearing a scarf, try a tube scarf.
A beanie or similar cover for the head, ears and face may be best in very cold weather.
Adjust your kids clothing for activity:
Remove a layer of your kids clothing just before starting an activity.
You will be cold for a moment but as you start to move you will warm up.
This will help you to avoid overheating and dampening the clothing with sweat.
Put layers back on when you have finished the activity.
If you are standing outside for long periods, try not to stand directly on the snow or cold ground.
Even a piece of cardboard under your feet will help keep you warm.
The same applies with sitting. Also try to stay out of the wind and you will stay warmer.
Key Points:
- Be aware of the current and weather forecast
- Dress in layers
- Adjust kids clothing for your activity level
- Enjoy the colder weather.
- Outside time is important for a healthy upbringing of your children!

Healthy Winter Treats For the Family
In the cooler months I always feel naturally drawn to all things warm.
I love to prepare food that helps the body to feel yummy, warm & nourished.
This season I didn't really have to do too much hard looking for the right ingredients, as our garden just produced the most amazing pumpkin harvest we ever had and is now already in its second round of producing more of those delicious, versatile vegetables.
Therefore we had it all:
- pumpkin soup,
- pumpkin curry,
- pumpkin scones,
- roasted pumpkins,
- pumpkin salad
- and pumpkin cake!
Some recipes weren't as well received as others, (if you read my blog about lunch box ideas, you will know why :-)? )
But fortunately something my family did enjoy was Gluten Free Pumpkin Cake.
Very easy to make and absolutely delicious and it pretty much could cover your hole day: From breakfast to lunch boxes, afternoon tea and even as a dinner desert.
Therefore, I feel trilled to share this recipe with you today:
Gluten Free Pumpkin Cake
- Prep and Cool time :40 mins
- Cook time: 40 mins
- Total time: 1 hour 20 mins
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, soft, for the pan
- 2 cups almond meal/flour
- ? teaspoon ?salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ? teaspoon ground ginger
- a pinch of ground nutmeg
- 1 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 1 cup honey or raw sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a small round cake tin with 1 tablespoon butter.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the almond flour, salt, baking soda and spices.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, butter, honey, eggs and vanilla.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients and whisk until well blended. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula.
- Bake 30 minutes. Carefully tent the edges of the cake with strips of foil to prevent them from getting too dark, and continue to bake 20 more minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Enjoy!

How are Organic Kids Clothes Sustainable?
When it comes to organic kids clothes, we talk a lot about sustainability. We talk about it from an environmental and ethical standpoint. It is a moral standard in clothing production that we should all meet. But when talking about kids clothes online, what does sustainability mean and what makes organic kids clothes sustainable?
Defining Sustainability
The Oxford English Dictionary defines Sustainability as able to be maintained at a certain rate or level and Conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. The original definition does not necessarily include an environmental aspect. But when it comes to production of clothing of organic kids clothes and other clothing, that is exactly what we are talking about. It is about using natural resources in a way that wont harm the planet.
Increasingly, sustainability goes beyond the environmental definition and into an ethical standpoint. This means that production of clothing and other goods is done fairly. All workers involved in the manufacturing process are paid a living wage and given decent working conditions. So when we think about organic kids clothes online, we are talking products that have been made with care to the environment and in a way that respects the basic rights of the people who made them.
How Are Our Organic Kids Clothes Sustainable?
When buying organic kids clothes online from Elves in the Wardrobe, you can rest assured that all our items meet our own standard for sustainability. All materials we use must be renewable and biodegradable. Renewable means that the source of the material can be replaced. For example, natural fibers like cotton can be replaced and keep providing material for fabric indefinitely after all it is a plant that will keep growing. This is in contrast to other natural resources like petroleum which is the base material for many synthetic clothes like nylon and polyester. Organic kids clothes will mostly be made from cotton, linen, wool and silk. Most of our kids clothes online are made from organic cotton.
Meeting Strict Rules to Be Eco-friendly
There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be sustainable. It is not enough to source fabric from renewable sources. All our kids clothes online are made from natural fibers that are grown in line with organic agricultural standards. This means without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.
Why are Our Clothes Organic?
Our organic kids clothes are deliberately made in an organic way. We oppose the chemicals used in non-organic production which damages local ecosystems and wildlife, use a huge amount of water and produce large amounts of CO2. Standard farming techniques are very rough on the environment. That's not to mention the detrimental effect that chemically grown materials have on our own bodies.
We are also conscious of the mass production culture of non-organic clothing that exploits workers. The organic movement encourages better working conditions and respect for employees. At Elves in the Wardrobe, we are keen to do something about it, and in our own way are contributing to a positive change.

Why This Single Mum Goes Organic
As a single mum of two beautiful daughters, I exhibit the standard behaviour you might expect.
This includes being fiercely protective of my children.
My maternal instincts operate in overdrive as I make daily decisions to keep them healthy, safe and happy.
It is due to this inherent parental pledge that I discovered (and fell in love with) Elves In The Wardrobe and their adorable, organic offerings.
You may be shaking your head in disbelief as you put two and two together and make five.
Single mum? Organic?
Well, let me set the record straight here. I recently purchased a new couch.
Having saved for months, it was my pride and joy.
I purchased fabric protector and insurance.
I set hard, fast rules, such as no food or drink near it.
I loved it and planned to protect it.
Well, multiply this situation a million-fold and apply it, not to new furniture, but to our children.
From the moment our beautiful babies enter the world we do everything within our power to protect them.
Did you know our babies skin is 20-30% thinner than ours?
This means external irritants, such as fabric dyes and pesticides, penetrate more easily.
So introduce them gently to our planet by swaddling them in soft, snuggly, chemical-free fabrics.
Don't purchase heaps of cheap, synthetic blankets.
Just one 100% natural Leela Cotton Baby Blanket, is all you need.
As our babies turn from bountiful bundles to crawling cuties, a new search begins.
We want a well thought-out wardrobe of comfy clothes.
We also want our thriving toddlers to be safe from chemicals
and toxins passing directly from synthetic materials into their brand-new bodies.
By this stage I knew exactly where to find what I was after.
Elves In The Wardrobe ticks all my boxes.
A happy hour of unrefined retail therapy finds me all I need.
But my OMG its soooo cute item has to be the Loud & Proud Snail T-shirt.
It doesn't stop there.
As children grow into free-thinking little people, picking their wardrobe may become a battle of wills.
I have two daughters ... need I say more.
Yet early education of our youngsters is key. Give them an understanding of organic.
Allow them to take pride in the clothes they wear.
Listen as they inform their friends how their clothes make the world a better place.
The Elves In The Wardrobe offering for your jolly juvenile is very cool.
Not a scratchy, shapeless cheesecloth in sight.
My top wear, wear and wear again item are the Kissa 3/4 Pants.
My youngest daughter would happily live in them!
For me, the cherry on the organic clothing cake, is the fact that everything is exceptional quality, hard wearing and machine washable.
This means .. they last!
For this reason, they fetch a good second hand price too.
So sell them on and share the organic clothing love, while recouping some costs.
You see, its all about priorities really.
Yes, I'm a single mum.
I have to make hard choices based on lack of funds and time in my kid-crazy world.
But my children are No. 1. Some day I will have to let them go.
If I have done everything in my power to give them the best start in life,
whilst protecting the planet which is their future ... then my job has been done.
